Young French women are embracing “le no-bra” – a phenomenon where women go braless – in higher numbers than other countries. The trend originates from a Western movement looking to free femininity from restrictive beauty standards, as well as better medical knowledge and – more recently – Covid confinements.

Going braless is nothing new. About 25 percent of women in the US report taking off their bra the moment they get home and 52 percent do it within the first 30 minutes. But there's a big difference between taking a bra off for a couple of hours versus never wearing one again.

First, yes, your breasts can sag for a variety of reasons. Drooping is the result of changes in the ligaments that form the supporting structures inside the chest. Over time – and for various reasons – these ligaments can lengthen and weaken. But no, going without a bra is not one of the reasons.

Most experts agree that aging — when the ligaments stretch and the breast tissue loses its elasticity — is the real culprit. "If anything, going braless can be healthier," argues Glynis Fox, Health professional and President of the Institute of Osteopaths.

An increasing number of women, especially those among the millennial generation, feel more comfortable about not wearing a bra, and what they wear is based more on what they want and not due to social norms or feminist ideology.

Dober said many women feel “liberated” by not wearing a bra, which is a sign of young women wanting to reclaim their “agency.”

Aside from the aesthetics, a lack of proper support (i.e. not wearing a bra) can also potentially lead to pain. The most immediate effect of having unsupported breast tissue is sharp or burning pain in the chest area or breast tenderness and tightness.

“It's OK to do whatever is comfortable for you. If not wearing a bra feels good to you, that's fine. If you feel that some support is needed, then maybe a bralette or a wire-free bra would be a happy medium at home. It all depends on what you're comfortable with.”

Besides soreness, no bra side effects also include muscle stress. Your breasts have some weight, and when you move around, a bra supports this weight. Not wearing a bra causes the neck, shoulder, and back area to strain and can lead to muscle knots. It is thus important to wear a well-fitted bra to avoid this issue.

However, it's also true that for many workplaces, displaying any kind of nipple or cleavage, however it's gendered, is considered inappropriate. This could be wearing a mesh singlet to your job at a dentist's office, or a teacher wearing a sheer shirt. It might not be considered best practice depending on your job.
